We all love donuts…amiright? But many of us try to stay clear of these sugar dosed and refined carbohydrate filled delights. Don’t get me wrong, treating yourself once in a while is great and there is NOTHING like a really delicious Boston Creme, or my personal favorite – GLAZED Jelly. There was a local donut shop in my hometown that made their own donuts and I remember on Sundays my stepdad would go fill a box and take them home. They had the most AMAZING glazed donuts with a homemade strawberry jam in the center that were out of this world. I’m drooling just thinking about it. Oh – and chocolate cake donuts – don’t even get me started! Anything with peanut butter…gah heaven. But back to what I am here to present to you! I have been on a mission to make a deliciously healthy donut without any added sugars, dairy or grains. So here it is!
These donuts have no added sugars, except for the banana I used to sweeten them. For me, since changing my diet to whole foods and unrefined products, I don’t crave things with a lot of sugar in them. Fruit is sweet enough! These donuts are held together with coconut flour and ground chia! (You can totally sub with ground flax seed as well) They do have egg in them, so they are not vegan, but they are paleo and gluten free! I even took an extra step to add a scoop of collagen for some added protein and nutrients! Collagen is wonderful for your hair, skin, nails, joints, digestion and muscles.
The recipe is below and it is super simple. From start to finish is only take about 35 minutes at the most, and hands on time is really only about 10 minutes! I wanted to have a few flavors, so I have included the additions I made for flavors as well! They are delicious and perfect for breakfast, snacking or dessert!
Healthy Donuts 🍩 (No-Added sugar!):
1️⃣ 2 ripe medium sized bananas 🍌
2️⃣ 5 tablespoons coconut flour
3️⃣ 2 @egglandsbest eggs 🍳
4️⃣ 4 egg white
5️⃣ 2 tablespoons ground @salbachia chia
6️⃣ optional: 1 scoop @furtherfoods collagen peptides for some extra nutrients and protein
Preheat oven to 350. Blend ingredients together. I divided this mixture into three to make three types: chocolate 🍫; banana 🍌; and strawberry 🍓-maca. For the 🍫 I added 2 tablespoons of @nunaturals cocoa powder. For the 🍌 , I added 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. For the 🍓 I added diced strawberries and 1 tsp @wildfoodsco maca powder. Grease a donut pan and spoon the batter into the molds. Place in oven and bake for about 20-22 minutes until fully cooked through. Test with a toothpick! Once they are cooled, remove from pan and top them with anything you’d like! Some of the toppings I used: @nunaturals chocolate syrup and @salbachia chocolate covered chia seeds, @once_again_nut_butter sunflower seed butter and walnuts, @julianbakery vanilla paleo protein powder, fresh strawberries and @kitehillfoods almond milk yogurt.
